A Star Shines at Extravaganza

Every year, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts transforms the Moran Theatre into a stage where every arts area talent can be celebrated. But for some students, Extravaganza is more than just a show; it’s a defining moment. This year, piano major alum Victor Minke Huls captivated audiences with his performance. His performance and talent for playing his instrument exemplified this year’s theme of “Resonance,” turning months of preparation into a magical evening for the DA community.

The History of the Spotlight

Every year when DA invites an alum to come and perform at Extravaganza, it’s truly a great opportunity for both students and alum. Students get to see what they could possibly be in the future and the great artist they can become, while the alum gets to revisit the place that built them up to where they are now. DA can build its students up so much, based on the opportunities and teaching we get to experience.

“It was very powerful to see Victor, he was a student just like us and was able to find his way in the real world. All we have to do is work hard and not give up.” says Adrienne Carol, a junior in vocal who explained the impact of seeing the Spotlight.

Rising to the Spotlight

Huls had determined beginnings. like some of the performers at Extravaganza, he was once a piano player. Before coming to Douglas Anderson, however, Huls was homeschooled. His passion for music came from his family, who were experienced in string instruments.

His passion for the piano transformed into a love for conducting and playing the cello. After graduating from universities like Northwestern University for a musical arts degree in orchestral conducting and the University of Michigan for a dual masters in orchestral conducting and cello performance, Huls moved to greater heights; performing not only in the state of Florida, but all around America in places like the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and the Jacksonville Symphony.

Leaving a Lasting Impact

By the end of Extravaganza, Victor’s contributions extend far beyond his on-stage moments. He inspires classmates, connects art areas, and reminds everyone why DA’s community thrives on creativity and collaboration. His dedication shows that a single performer can embody the heart of a show, making Extravaganza unforgettable.

Principal Timothy Feagins summed up Extravaganza to be." Extravaganza is always one of the most powerful celebrations of Douglas Anderson. My overall impression this year was one of tremendous pride. The level of artistry, collaboration, and professionalism displayed by our students across all departments truly reflects the standard of excellence that defines our school. It is also a meaningful opportunity for the broader Jacksonville community to see the impact of arts education and the extraordinary work our students and teachers produce every day."
